Castlefield Events Arena

A flight of stone steps lead down from Liverpool Road to the Castlefield canal basin.

In the 18th Century a large warehouse sat here spanning the twin canal channels.  Known as the Staffordshire Warehouse, it was built around 1790 and survived until it was finally demolished in 1950.

Today, with the warehouse gone, the canal channels provide mooring places for narrow boats, and a large open plaza sits beside the canal.

Fitting in with the Roman history of this site, the plaza rises up in a series of steps towards the replica of the former fort wall.  This ampitheatre was created as part of the redevelopent of Castlefield  in the 1990s.  The terraced area has a permanent canopy which provides cover for crowds that gather for various outdoor events.  These have include the Castlefield Festival, canal festivals and even big screen football games.
