Merchant's Warehouse

The Merchant's Warehouse is the oldest surviving warehouse in this canal basin complex. It dates back to 1827. In the 1970s it was badly damaged by fire. Ian Simpson Architects completely restored the building between 1995 and 1997.

Ian Simpson's web site indicates that the process of restoration, "sought to respect the integrity of the original warehouse building...... High quality materials - steel, glass and red sandstone - complement the existing building whilst allowing life and activity to be visible from a distance. Light has been introduced into the building and is distributed through a central void."

In the aerial photograph below, you can see the Merchant's Warehouse with a footbridge crossing the canal nearby.  That bridge has gone to be replaced by the dramatic Merchant's Bridge.
