Primitive Methodist Church (Former) - Ardwick With signs announcing the New Gaelic
Bar and the New 32 Club it may not be completely obvious
that these two buildings in Higher Ardwick are actually
remnants of a very large Methodist Church. As you
can see on the map below, the Higher Ardwick Primitive
Methodist Church once occupied the corner of Higher
Ardwick and Park Street in what is today a parking lot.
All references to the church suggest
that it was an impressive building and you can see on
the aerial image below that it had a tall spire that was
casting a shadow on the day the RAF flew over.
What is left are the buildings that
contained the Sunday School and the minister's
house. William Dawes won the competition to design
the church, school and house. It was completed in
1878. The Pevsner Guide describes what is left as,
"A picturesque assemblage of elements in sandstone
rubble: Gothic detailing. Two-storey ploygonal
hall with a tall pointed roof."
Dwindling congregation numbers resulted in the
church's closure in 1964 and it was subsequently
demolished.
The school building appears to have
been used for the Gaelic Bar.
The former minister's house appears to be a residence. |
