Boddington's Brewery
|
This is the one that got away
because by the time I got around to creating this web site the
Boddington's Brewery that prided itself as "The Heart of
Manchester" was closed and swiftly demolished leaving only the chimney
as evidence that it had ever been there. As you can see in April
of 2008 it was a car park.
Boddington's Strangeways Brewery was founded in 1778 by Thomas Caister and Thomas Fry. The location of the brewery just outside of the city centre was apparently chosen because it wasn't subject to a tax levied on grain within the precinct of the city. The name Boddington came later. Henry Boddington arrived on the scene in 1832 as a brewery worker but years of working his way up in the business he became a partner. By 1853 he was the owner. Boddington's Brewery continued to trade and its brand became synonymous with Manchester. However, In September 2004, the Strangeways brewery closed and production moved to Magor in South Wales and Glasgow although Boddington's cask ales are now produced at the Hyde Brewery in Manchester's Moss Side. ![]() |
