Chapel Street Post Office and Bank



This building that curves elegantly on to Chapel Street in Salford bears the scars of neglect and the signs of its history.  It occupied that corner when Irwell Street ran past its doors to join up with Chapel Street.  Today that portion of the side street has been pedestrianized.  The building was empty and clearly in a poor state of repair when I took these images in May of 2013.  As you can see, windows are open exposing it to attacks from weather and pigeons.  The 1950s maps of the area indicate that the end closest to the camera was a bank and the portion of the building on the far right behind the van and the red car was a post office.



Evidence of that can be seen above and below.  Above at the bank end you can see the night deposit slot that banks of the period had.  Below, beside the King George pillarbox are the remains of the coin operated stamp machines of the old post office.






When I returned in March of 2014 the building was gone.
