The Gas Offices - Salford

While I was photographing Salford Central Station my wife noticed this building down Bloom Street.  Its startling brick and stone design cetainly made it stand out but it was the tower that made it look familiar.  The tower reminded me of the one on Nicholls School in Ardwick and on the Crown Court on Minshull Street.  My suspicion was that it must have been the work of Thomas Worthington the architect of those other buildings and indeed that turned out to be the case.

This building on Bloom Street in Salford has carved above the door "Gas Offices" so must have been a corporation building at some time.

Today it belongs to Kenworthy's Legal Chambers and it is called Arlington House, a Grade II listed building of High Gothic style and  designed by Thomas Worthington in 1880.  Kenworthy's web site says that the building has undergone a "total and sympathetic refurbishment" and that, "this atmospheric building retains many original features, yet provides the perfect base for a busy and efficient, modern set of Chambers with the added benefit of conference and function facilities, which are available for hire by professional clients."
