Opened by the LNWR in 1884 it served Liverpool; Huddersfield and Leeds; and Warrington, Chester and North Wales. Platford 3 at Exchange Station ran out of the station building over the bridge that crosses Victoria Street and connected to platform 11 at Victoria Station.  For a time it was the longest railway platform in the world.  It closed to passengers in 1969 and was later demolished.

The next two images, shown with the permission of Ben Brooksbank,  were taken in the station during the 1960s.

Following the demolition of the station buildings, the station forecourt was used a car park.

After decades during which the site was only used as a car par, in 2015 work began on a new office development known as Embankment.

Embankment is a new office development on the site of the former Exchange Station, across from Manchester Cathedral.  The site has been a car park for decades accessed from Victoria Street over the station approach bridge that spans the River Irwell.  The developments website says that, "... The bare facts are that 101 Embankment will offer 165,000ft2 of Grade A office space, together with 442 covered parking spaces."  They add that the buildings will provide the occupants with, "... stunning 360 degree views across the river and city centre, at all levels."  The images below were taken in November of 2015 when construction was underway.
