New Bailey Street & Chapel Street Corner,
Salford This former pub building on the
corner of New Bailey Street and Chapel Street in Salford
is one that needs regular updating. It seems that
every time I photograph it the occupants have
changed. The image above was taken in October of
2014 at which time it was home to "Caribbean Flavas", a
convenience store, and Taes Bar and Cafe. Taes was
closed at the time but expecting to reopen after
renovations.
On an earlier visit a large portion
of the building was home to the Hotel Inn which claimed
on its website to be ideally situated in the heart of
Manchester. In fact, since its address is 187 -
189 Chapel Street, it is in Salford. It also
contained a Tandoori restaurant.
Previous to that it was known as the Copperheads Hotel and, if you look closely at the Hotel Inn sign on the building (see below), you can see that the Copperheads name was still visible beneath the new lettering. *********************** Much earlier it was the Brown Bull
Public House, and it can be traced back to at least 1841
because the Pigot & Slater Directory of Manchester
and Salford listed it among the taverns in the
area. The Brown Bull on their list was at this
location and Francis Veysey was the landlord. You
can see it in the map extract below which is dated circa
1844.
