Chapman Building & Gallery - University of
Salford
When the Pevsner Guide for
Lancashire: Manchester and South-East was published in
2004 it included a description of the Chapman
building. It said of it that it had, " ...
a South Bank look about it." That
seems hard to understand when you look at it in the
image above, taken in May of 2013. However, if you
look at the images below (shown with the permission of
the University of Salford) taken in the 1970s you can
see the point of that comparison.
The change of appearance is the
result of a major refurbishment and the addition of new
extensions completed in September of 2012. The
university says that, "The outdated 1960s
building has been completely transformed into a
stylish and modern space with excellent green
credentials. Students now enjoy six lecture
theatres equipped with the very latest technology
and large screen displays, a series of learning and
breakout spaces, plus a Fairtrade café with views
across the campus. The poor energy performance
of the building has also been tackled to
significantly reduce carbon emissions and energy
bills while providing a huge improvement in the
student experience." The Fairhurst
Design Group were responsible for the work on the
Chapman Building.
