For much of his life Dalton was an ardent meteorologist. He compiled a record of more than 200,000 atmospheric observations in his notebooks and these observations led Dalton to study gases. His experimentation with gases then led to the formulation of his atomic theory. In 1803 he applied this concept to a table of atomic weights and in 1805 he wrote a paper on the absorption of gases, which in turn led to the development of his famous law of partial pressures, known also as Dalton's law. Dalton was also the first to provide a scientific description of color blindness, a condition from which he suffered, and which was long called "Daltonism." In 1822 he became a member of the Royal Society and in 1825 received its medal for his work on the atomic theory. John Dalton
died on July 27, 1844. His name lives on in Manchester where three
streets in the Greater Manchester area were named after him.

Football (Junior) Though the team started off badly and were defeated by Cobden and Temple they managed to defeat Chetham 3-2. Football (Senior) The Senior team also lost to Cobden and Temple, but they had a good match against Chetham and won 7-3, Oliver scoring 3 of the goals. The team finished third in the table. Cross-Country This was a very bad season for Dalton's Cross-Country team who finished fourth. The team consisted of W. Gillings, L. Vitkin, A. Schofield, J. Shaw, B. Hollingworth, K. Beck, R. Oliver, D. Thomason. We hope that the defeat will spur future teams to greater efforts and results. Cricket In last year's Cricket matches the Senior team lost their matches against Temple and Cobden but had a convincing win against Chetham. The Juniors had a very good season finishing joint first with Cobden. After convincing victories over Chetham and Temple they were finally defeated by Cobden. Swimming In the coming Swimming Gala we hope to improve on last year's performance which gained us second place. Although there were no outstanding swimmers the team as a whole swam well. Athletics Last year's team finished third in the athletics. It is hoped that this year's efforts will produce more satisfying results. In the overall Championship Dalton finished second to Cobden. |
Netball The Senior team did not have a very successful season as they won only one of their matches, losing to Chetham 11-13, and drawing with Cobden 9-9. Their win over Temple, however, was a good one, the score being 21-3. The Junior team played particularly well, winning two of their matches and drawing one, so retaining the Junior Netball Trophy. Hockey The Senior Hockey team played extremely well this season, winning all their matches and so making Dalton the Hockey champions. Swimming (by Dorothy Navin) Every girl concerned with the Gala seemed to put her whole heart into it. We did extremely well in that we came first in four events, second in two, third in seven and fourth in only two. Unfortunately this was not enough to give us first place. We ended a close second but hope to improve on this in the coming year. Athletics Despite a great effort made by the girls, Dalton was again placed fourth in the overall total. However, it is hoped that this coming Sports Day will prove to be a more successful one. |
