History records that there have been schools in the area of the junction of Devonshire Street and Hyde Road, in Ardwick, Manchester, for more than 130 years. Only one remains, the Ellen Wilkinson High School, and it is under threat of closure. This web site is dedicated to telling the history of one of those schools, the Ardwick Technical High School. This web site will tell the story of our school from 1870 until the end of the school year in 1967 when it ceased to exist in the form which I and my fellow students remember. In my opinion it was a school for this fine city to be proud of. Unfortunately, this is the story of a ghost because in the 1990s the Manchester Education Committee saw fit to demolish the building. However, as if it is unwilling to be erased from Manchester's history, a remnant remains, or at least it did remain in May of 2000 when I last visited the site. A fragment of the outside wall was still standing. That portion of the wall which was on the Devonshire Street side of the boys' gate. What I can guarantee is that even when that little piece of wall is gone the school will not be forgotten and hopefully a fragment of it can live on in this web site.
