Jelmoli,
Zurich, Switzerland
The Jelmoli Department Store in Zurich has
something of a split personality. On one
side (see above) it has the appearance of a
glass palace reflecting its earliest format,
on the other (see below) it is a fine example
of Art Deco architecture.
The original store, founded by Johann Peter
Jelmoli Ciolina, opened in 1833. In 1898
they moved into their new building that was
apparently based on Parisian department stores
and it was described as a "glass
palace".
Further modifications and additions were made
over the years as the business grew.
Apparently the architectural practice of
Hermann Stadler & Emil Usteri were
responsible for the 1900 version of the store
(above). Otto Pfleghard and Max Haefeli
are credited with designing extensions in 1909
and 1924.
