Jelmoli, Zurich, Switzerland

The Jelmoli Department Store in Zurich has something of a split personality.  On one side (see above) it has the appearance of a glass palace reflecting its earliest format, on the other (see below) it is a fine example of Art Deco architecture.

The original store, founded by Johann Peter Jelmoli Ciolina, opened in 1833.  In 1898 they moved into their new building that was apparently based on Parisian department stores and it was described as a "glass palace".

Further modifications and additions were made over the years as the business grew.  Apparently the architectural practice of Hermann Stadler & Emil Usteri were responsible for the 1900 version of the store (above).  Otto Pfleghard and Max Haefeli are credited with designing extensions in 1909 and 1924.
