The
building's architects explain on their
website that this project was a
refurbishment that involved, "... Undertaking
a series of complex structural changes
to enact a complete transformation
inside and out. New open plan
office floors have been created through
the infill of existing light wells and
removal of redundant staircases,
increasing available floor area by
almost 50%. The cornerstone of the
building - a 1950s terrazzo staircase -
has been sensitively retained and
restored." The building's
brochure points out that, as a result of
the refurbishment, it offers a, "...
new Portland stone façade to the
south elevation incorporating large
picture frame windows, newly
constructed top floor clad in
bronze, new air conditioning, and
new contemporary brickwork fronting
Market Place...."
