The red brick railway
station building, beside the canal in
Malmo, is the city's central station
constructed at the end of the 19th
century. Originally it was a
terminus, with the exception of a single
through-line carrying freight into the
city docks. This all changed with
the construction of the Oresund Bridge and
the Malmo City Tunnel that carried the
Oresund trains from Denmark under the city
into a subterranean station below the old
Central Station.
Below is an image of
the tunnel during construction beside
the old station building.
(The image is shown
here under license, the details of which
can be seen at the bottom of the page).
Above ground is the
new glass hall designed by Metro
Arkiteker.
They say that this new addition, "... contrasts with the historic building of the Central Station. Modern architecture efficiently caters for the increasing flow of people travelling, while some older parts of the station have been given a different use with a greater focus on service." |
