Description
|
Millennium Point is
located on a former brownfield site in
Birmingham's city centre. It was
developed as a public private partnership
and spearheaded by Birmingham City
Council, Birmingham City University and
Birmingham Chamber of Commerce.
It is home to Thinktank, Birmingham
Science Museum, as well as the faculties
of Birmingham City University and
Birmingham Metropolitan College.
It was designed by Grimshaw Architects and
built at a cost of £114m. The
building's website explains that it has, "...
been the home to some of the city’s
leading institutions - Birmingham City
University, Birmingham Metropolitan
College, Thinktank and Marketing
Birmingham have either been based in
or continue to operate from the
building. (It) has seen many changes
of the years and has evolved to meet
the needs of its visitors and
partners. In 2012, Millennium Point
became a leading funder for the new
Science Park based at Thinktank,
divested land to become the new site
of the world-renowned Birmingham
Conservatoire, repurposed the former
IMAX cinema facility – converting the
auditorium into a centre for learning,
and will be the visible gateway to the
proposed HS2 Curzon Street
Station. Today, Millennium Point
is 99% occupied and continues to
demonstrate its relevance to the
people of Birmingham and beyond."
The Pevsner Guide to Birmingham describes
Millennium Point as, "... A steel
and glass shed, 165 metres long."
