The Rogers Stirk
Harbour & Partners website
describes the location of the Lloyd's
Registry Building as follows, "Set within a
conservation area, access to Lloyd's
Register is through a landscaped
churchyard. The site is
largely surrounded by existing
buildings, including 71 Fenchurch
St, constructed for Lloyd's Register
in 1901. This Grade II listed
building has been incorporated into
the new headquarters and extensively
restored"
The
building is home to Lloyd's Register an
organization that began its work in 1760
and today provides,
" independent
assurance to companies operating
high-risk, capital-intensive assets in
the energy and transportation sectors,
to enhance the safety of life,
property and the environment."
In describing the concept of the building, the architects say that the challenge was to provide, " ... the required amount of new accommodation within the remaining space, three slender, tapered rectangular blocks fan out alongside two dramatic glazed atria, varying in height from six to 14 levels. The atria, central to the design concept, allow light into and views out of the building at all levels, despite the constrictions of the site." |
