Description
|
The 1991 World Figure Skating
Championships were awarded to Munich and
there was a requirement for a training
hall in addition to the main performance
arena. This resulted in the
construction of this building located next
door to the Olympic Ice Arena that was
built in the 1960s. The building
features prominent external support beams
that presumably allow for a large internal
space free from pillars. In order to
preserve the capacity of the parking area
at that end of the Olympiapark, the
building is raised up on concrete
pillars. Inside it features an ice
surface that measures 60 meters x 30
meters making it one of the largest
skating centers in Europe. One of
its uses is as the national training
centre for short track speed skating.
