Auswärtiges Amt - Werderscher Markt, Berlin

Architect
Thomas Müller and Ivan Reimann
Date Built
1997 - 1999
Location
Werderscher Markt
This building on Werderscher Markt is home to Germany's Auswärtiges Amt, or Foreign Ministry of Germany.

After reunification the Bundestag moved back to Berlin and when that happened homes needed to be found for the various federal institutions.  The solution for the Foreign Office was to house it in the building that had once been home to the Reichsbank and the Central Committee (seen on the far left of the image below).  The architect Hans Kollhoff was commissioned to renovate the old building.  Later a new building was added to the complex facing the old building across a courtyard.

This "new wing", featured on this page, was designed by the architectural practice of Thomas Müller and Ivan Reimann.  Work began on the building in 1997 and was completed two years later.  It houses a visitors centre, cafetaria, library and the offices of the United Nations.  The eastern end of the building another courtyard, this time within the new building,  overlooks the River Spree.
