The
Huntarian Art Gallery on the campus of
Glasgow University is definitely a case of
"don't judge the book by its cover".
This brutalist concrete building looks
like a collection of disperate elements
that don't seem to belong together.
However, the designers deserve a lot of
credit because the rather awkward square
tower that appears to have had a number of
odd features tacked on to it is home to a
magical exhibition. As awkward as it
looks on the outside, inside is an exact
reproduction of the home of Charles Rennie
Mackintosh and his talented wife Margaret
Macdonald Mackintosh when they lived
nearby at 78 Southpark Avenue.
Before their former home was demolished,
exact measurements of it were taken and
most of the contents went into
storage. What William Whitfield did was recreate the interior space and the Huntarian furnished it with the couple's furniture and art work. The house is open to view but photography is not allowed. If you want to see what it looks like follow this link for The Mackintosh House. On the outside the architect located the windows and the front door as they would have been, although exiting through that door would be a mistake. *************************************
Whitfield's
building features pre-cast concrete
panels that were brush hammered to
expose the aggregate. A
cylindrical tower, reminiscent of a
Scottish castle, houses a spiral
staircase.
Moving from the foyer to the galleries takes you through a set of aluminium doors created by the sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi. The collection includes works by Whistler. A small sculpture garden contains an eclectic collection of works .... ..... including another piece by Paolozzi |
