Pevsner describes this building as, "an
austere granite and mosaic faced
complex." The granite is from the
quarries near the town of
Rivière-A-Pierre, in Quebec, Canada. The
building is the former home of Maples furniture
store, built as a replacement for the companies
famous store that opened on Tottenham Court Road
in the mid 1800s. The Maples furniture
empire expanded over the years to 24 stores but
in 1997 the company went into receivership.
