Description

Apparently,
according to Historic England, when this
building was designed in the 1970s the brief
was to, "... design a visually striking
head office for the Halifax Building
Society." I think it is safe
to conclude that BDP met the brief.
Clearly others agreed because it received the
RIBA Award for Architecture in 1975, European
Architectural Heritage Year Award 1975,
Manchester Society of Architects Award 1997,
BCO Award 2000, National Lighting Award
2000. The listing notes describe it as,
"... one of the most architecturally
influential buildings of the 20th century,
{featuring)
a collaborative and humane work
environment, and though no longer a head
office it continues to function as a
highly efficient commercial building."
"In 1997 BDP upgraded the catering
facilities and interiors in the spirit of
the original building. On the ground floor
a staff coffee shop for 130 employees
replaced the self-service restaurant, with
a restaurant for 230 employees on the
mezzanine level replacing some cellular
office accommodation. A double-height
glass screen was added to separate the
entrance area from the coffee shop."
"In the early C21 there were alterations
to the fourth floor, precipitated by it no
longer being a head office. While the
suite of rooms previously forming the
directors' suite remained, the boardroom
was no longer used as such, becoming an
informal seating area. Some of the
perimeter offices and bedrooms, and the
roof gardens were removed to accommodate
more staff in an open-plan office."
