A Walk Around the Barbican

All of the images were contributed by Megan Boardman.

Within the Barbican sit St Giles Cripplegate Church and remnants of London's ancient Roman Wall.

Note: the crenulations at top of the building on right are different to all other parts of complex - this was the first building built, later the style changed.  The water is dyed green since it is not very deep and would otherwise reflect gray buildings.

Below: clever concealment of parking garages - not visible from walkway due to size of lip at edge.  Note textured concrete - done in situ using drills.

Below concrete samples retained in service passage.

The Barbican Arts Centre

This is the current front entrance to the arts centre.  Originally it was the service entrance.  The architects intended people to access via skywalks.  The Centre has a 40m lift to take lorries down to the theatre for unloading.

When the Arts Centre was modified in the 2000s to move the entrance to Silk Street, it was necessary to construct this walkway.  This prevented the light from above getting to the lower levels of the Centre.  To address this problem, they added this circular skylight in the middle of the walkway.
