Autopon, Amsterdam, Holland

Architect
Johannes Bernardus Ingwersen & Commer de Geus
Date Built
1953 - 1961
Location
Overtoom
Description
This brutalist mixed-use building on Amsterdam's Overtoom was designed by Ingwersen and de Geus but inspired by Le Corbusier.  When built, it featured a street level VW car showroom and garage and an underground car park for 200 cars.  It featured a glass walled display space that projected out from the building above the footpath.  It can be seen in the image below with advertising for the David Lloyd fitness centre that occupies the building today.

Above the garage were 56 "spacious" apartments.  I have seen it suggested that it is one of the 100 most important post-war buildings in Amsterdam.
