The Carlton
opened on April 16, 1938. The building
was designed by the architectural practice
of Robinson & Keefe. The Cinema
Treasures website says that it was built in,
"Art Deco style," and, "Inside, the decoration relied
principally on the use of paint and
lighting, but two large displays with a
musical instrument motif were formed by
twenty panels on either side of the
screen. There was seating for 1,500 in the
stalls and 500 in the circle. A stage and
dressing room were also included in the
design." In more recent years MGM purchased the building and converted it into a 3 screen format, and later 4 screens. However, it closed for the last time as a cinema in October of 1996. Today it is home to the XD Theatre offering a 4-D experience to customers. |
