Description

Behind the Tate Britain Art Gallery and on the site of the former Millbank Penitentiary, sits the Millbank Housing Estate.  This Grade II and Grade II* Listed collection of 16 buildings is an Arts & Crafts style housing estate built between 1897 and 1902.  The buildings are arranged around a rectangular garden and are constructed of red brick much of which was salvaged from the demolition of the penitentiary.  The facades also feature darker brick and render and are adorned with Arts and Crafts doorways and dormers.





The estate was designed to accommodate 4330 people largely displaced by the redevelopment of the Clare Market area of Holborn.  The buildings are all named after famous artists.

Hogarth House (below) was the first of the blocks to be completed.
