Description
|
This
two-storey Beaux-Arts style building on the
corner of Main Street and Fairford East, in
Moose Jaw, was commissioned by the Merchants
Bank of Canada and completed in 1919. The
building is clad in bricks and Tyndall limestone
and features fluted columns with capitals.
The Merchant Bank chose the architectural
practice of Storey and Van Egmond to design a
building.
In 1922 the Merchants Bank was absorbed by the
Bank of Montreal. The local branch of the
Bank of Montreal had been located across the
street and following the merger it moved into
this building. It continued to
be a Bank of Montreal until 1984 when it became
a branch of Canada Trust. In the late
1990s its connection with the finance industry
came to an end when it became a retail outlet. |
