This
grand arch on Leadenhall Street is a Grade II
Listed structure sitting incongruously infront
of Richard Rogers' Grade I Listed Lloyd's
Building. In fact, it is all that is left
of the 1928 version of Lloyd's, designed by Sir
Edwin Cooper, that was demolished in the early
1980s to make way for Rogers' building.
This was once the entrance to Lloyd's of London
insurance brokers. You can see an image of
the old building on the Archiseek
website.
Historic England describe
the structure as "Rich, classical
style of Portland stone - large,
ornamented doorway set in colossal niche
with coffered semi-dome. ....
.... On either side of the recessed
doorway are restored panels that hold
memorials to the two World Wars"
