Description
The building that is home to the Grand Hotel Amrath started life as an office block for six shipping companies based in Amsterdam, hence its name as The Shipping House and the maritime theme of the building's decoration.  Het Scheepvaarthuis is regarded as a shining example of the work of the Amsterdam School of architects.

Today, the Shipping House is home to the Grand Hotel Amrath, who describe the building as, "... perhaps the most beautiful structure built in the style of the Amsterdam School. It boasts not only a breathtaking exterior, but also an interior of unsurpassed beauty. Every room in our five-star hotel features details from the maritime past. Views of the canal or the IJ waterway make an overnight stay here a special occasion steeped in history."
