New Longsight Book

June 2010

When I started the "Longsight Memories" Website, more than a decade ago, I was driven by two motivations.  The first was fond memories of my childhood growing up in Longsight and the second was a conviction that, unfortunately, it was unlikely that anyone would care enough to document its history.  As much as I care about the place it wasn't likely that people would be queuing up to write about it.  I based this assumption, at least in part, on the fact that only one very slim volume existed on the subject of Longsight's history and it was written by a person who only lived there for a brief period.

However, I'm glad to say that this is no longer the case.  Jill Cronin and Frank Rhodes, who have books about Belle Vue and Gorton already on their resume, have now turned their attention to Longsight and produced an engaging and evocative book in the "Britain in Old Photographs" series.  They have brought their passion for local history and enthusiasm for South Manchester to the task and the end result has filled that gap and put Longsight on the bookshelves.

The book combines an interesting historical documentation of the district with personal narratives by and about people who lived there.  Readers will find their own memories flooding back as they thumb through the photographs and, no doubt, relive their own family histories.  Jill and Frank have produced a time capsule that will bring pleasure to Longsight people wherever they live.
