Your Letters

Hello David,
First of all let me say, congratulations on your wonderful website. This has brought back many happy memories of Longsight. My name is Lynda Jones, (nee Beeston) and I lived there as a child from the age of 6 to 11 yrs old, 1946 - 1951. I lived on North Road, now Northmoor Road, in the houses next to Norman Grove. I attended Stanley Grove primary school. My class teacher was Miss Lyon, headmistress Miss Armitage. Friends I remember from days at Stanley Grove school are, Glenys Jones, June Ablott, Eileen Ramsden, Francis Gafney.

My grandmother also lived in Greville Street, off Dickinson Road, and her house is still there to-day. The photographs you have on your site are great, but just wondering why St. Cyprians Church photo is not included. I remember Stockport Road, and the shops my mother used to buy from, Woolworths, Dents, Timpsons, and of course Raffos Ice Cream Shop. The photos of the cinemas bring back many memories. I remember going to see "Bambi" at the Kings cinema, and "Superman" at the Shaftesbury. I attended North Road Methodist Sunday school, on the corner of East Road, so thanks for those photos.

One of the main reasons for this email, is to try and find somebody that might remember a local identity of Longsight. Mrs. Betty Kirkley, lived on a street directly next to the Co-op on North Road. She was a talented musician and played in various dance bands in the 1930's/1940's. At one stage she played in an all ladies band in Manchester. Mrs. Betty Kirkley played saxophone, clarinet, piano, and gave music lessons from her house in Longsight. I was one of her students, and I did many concerts with Mrs. Kirkley, who put on shows all over Manchester, for pensioner clubs, and the under privileged. In the late 1950's Betty Kirkley tragically died in a house fire in her home in Longsight, along with her husband and sister. The story made the Manchester Newspapers at the time. I would love to hear from anyone who could give me more details on this, and maybe an exact date, so I could find the article in the Manchester Evening News archives.

My aunt worked for many years at Longsight Station, so thanks for photos.

Once again, this is a wonderful website and great for anyone who lived in Longsight, and doing family history.

I now live in Adelaide, Australia, and it is just wonderful to go on line, and see all this great information on a place I have many happy memories of in Longsight.

Hello David

I have logging on to your Longsight memories web page for the past six months or so and it brings back so many good memories. I am not from Longsight but West Gorton, I was born in 1946 in Norton street (off Clowes street) and as kids we would walk along Margaret street cross Hyde road and along Stowell street to Longsight station and play in the sheds where the steam engines were. Then on to Platt fields via Stockport road and Dickenson road.

In the summer with the long light nights we would ride our bikes along Hyde road to Reddish bridge and along the canal to Clayton, then along the Clayton cut to Ashton and Stayly Bridge. If we were feeling really energetic we would ride along the Hyde canal to Marple and fish for Gudgeon and Roach.

Would also go Jacksons clay pit to catch frogs and newts, then come home and try to sneak into Bellvue by climbing over the wall down Hunters lane, sometimes we were successfull sometimes we would get caught and get a clip around the ears, untill one day after getting caught this old bloke came up to us and suggested we go to the main gate on Hyde road and when a large crowd of people came out we should walk in backwards, well we did and it works.

I went to Nicholls school on Hyde road when it was boys only and we would go to High street baths once a week for swimming.

Well David thanks for the memories.

Congratulations on a fine site. Particularly interested in photos of Parry Road tunnel and Gore Brook - trouble is that for me you photographed the wrong end of the tunnels. From 1947 to1960 I worked in a factory on the other side of the embankment with its entrance on Brook Terrace which then ran to Stockport Rd with Chell St. on the right through to Stanley Grove. Gore brook ran open to Stockport Rd through open ground (Bombsite?) Probably all gone now. Anyway, just writing to thank you for your efforts.

Dear Mr Boardman
My wife and I have been visiting the Virtual Tour of the baths on your web-site and this has been especially interesting for my wife Wendy (Lee) as she and her late mother Maud Millar were frequent users of the baths. Maud lived with her parents at 32 High St. and used the baths from about the time that they opened in 1906 at intervals until 1926. She was Northern Junior Champion at one time and I am attaching a photo of her with other ladies at the baths at
the time , presumably, of a swimming Gala. Maud is at the left-hand end of the front row and has the Union Flag on her costume. We don't know the year in which the picture was taken. Perhaps you might have a calendar of such events and can work out when it might have been?
My wife visited the baths during the 1939-45 war years when she was evacuated to live with her grandparents and learned to swim at the baths. She would be very interested to hear from anyone who might remember the Millar or Lee families.

Hello David

Im sorry to bother you, but both my Mum and Dad went to Ross Place School. I think they both left in 1948, a little before your time but I wondered if you recall them or their families at all. My dad (Bob or Robert) and his family (the Coupe's) lived on Grey St and when my Mum (Maureen Heslin) and Dad married, they moved to South Street (where I was born). I have just been conducting a few searches and by accident found your page. Reading your memories, brought many happy memories of my Mum and dad (who both recently passed away) flooding back. They were both very keen on the past of Manchester and were always reading up on Manchester's history. I just wish they could have seen your site, they would have loved it. Funnily enough, we moved to Denton...at first living on Hyde Road (1,117) and then they moved to Oak Drive, finally moving to low Wood Road.

Thanks for the pleasure your site has brought to me.

Regards

Jim Coupe

I notice on your website that you make ref to Pop Walker, although I think you may have been at Plymouth Grove before me (1959-1965). I remember him as a wonderful teacher - other children were intimidated by his manner. I remember that he once said that he could draw a line an inch long and be out by only fractions of a thou - and he proved it too! I can still do that today, thirty-five-odd years on, because he made me want to practice until I could judge it as well (almost) as he! It hasn't done me a lot of good in a practical sense but. goodness, do I have a good eye for measurements! With his wonderful Roman nose and mane of white hair, he has never left my memory (it helped that he always gave me good marks!) which must be a desirable attainment for any teacher. Of all my teachers, including those at Grammar School, I remember him most fondly. Thought you might like to know.

Hello David

Thank you for your e-mail through friendsreunited. I have looked on your website and it is very good. There is one photograph of my class year but unfortunately I do not seem to be on it. I think at that time I was due to go to hospital, so probably missed it, but I recognise many faces. I will have a look to see if I have any photographs of my part of Earl Street. We lived at 103. If I do find any photographs I will have to send them to you as we do not have a scanner. In that event I would need to have an address of where to send them.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards

Pamela (Greenahlgh)

Hello David

Yes, I do remember Midgeleys butchers, my mother used to send me there on a Saturday morning for our joint of beef. Of course not every week. I had to tell Mr Midgeley "mi mam says she wants a piece of beef no more than 5/- (25p in todays money) she said, if it is a penny over she did not want it". Oh! mi mam says and a piece of fat to cook it with" well Mr Midgeley stopped for a second looked at me mumbled and then said well I'd better do as yer mam says. I used to hate going. I remember the chippy across the road too! I used to go for scraps I think he charged 1/2penny or 1penny. Do you remember Peter Kane, Bob Burns and Sylvia Bowker? Peter and Bob lived on Earl Street and Sylvia lived in Morton Street behind the Clarence pub.

I have found a few photographs they are old of course, I have written names on the back of them and approximately the year. I cannot find any from Plymouth Grove school I have probably thrown them out when we moved house, the ones I am sending are of Earl Street and some of my relations who also lived in Earl Street from the 1900s. Notice we are all dressed up on some of them, it is only because it is Whit week. We were scruffy other times. I will get the photographs to you shortly, I just hope you can use them.

Regards
Pamela

Hello David

We lived on the row with the Star pub which was always boarded up and Platts Newsagents (later Eyres next door) at one end and I think it was a old shop who used to sell parafin, I remember they knocked the shop down in the early sixties.

Dear David,

Your information on Longsight Memories is most informative. Do you know of a similar website for Ardwick. I used to live off Higher Ardwick and migrated to Australia in 1968.
