St Luke's
Primary School is located in what is today Ardwick
beside Langport Avenue. When I lived in
Longsight as a child in the 1950s, St Luke's didn't
exist and this was very much Longsight. The
school websites says that St. Luke's is, "...
a voluntary controlled, Church of England
primary school. It is a purpose built
school with an integral nursery. Our
buildings are set in extensive grounds and we
cater for children from the age of three to
eleven. St Luke’s is a developing 2 form
entry school of up to 30 children per class,
with 2 forms per year group. Nursery has
increased capacity to a 65 place intake – all
places are full time once your child has settled
in. We aim to provide for the children a
secure and caring environment in which they may
achieve their full potential, equipping them for
a rapidly changing world. We believe in
close co-operation between home and school, to
achieve an effective partnership for your
child's education."
The image
below shows the integrated nursery unfortunately
almost hidden by the blossoming trees.
The school is in the process of expansion as you can see from the images below. The first was taken in 2009 and the second in 2014 from about the same location. The aerial photograph below shows the area in the 1940s. I have shaded in the approximate site of St. Luke's today. As you can see, in the 1940s this was dominated by terraced housing and some commercial buildings. You can also see the former Grey Street Recreation Ground that is now the "Wonderland Park". |
