St Robert's Roman Catholic School -Montgomery Road

St Robert's Roman Catholic Church and St. Robert's R. C. School sat side-by-side on a plot of land on Hamilton Road between Farrer Road and Montgomery Road.  The aerial photograph below, taken in the 1940s, shows both of them.  The yellow arrow indicates the school and the red arrow the church.

The foundation stone of St. Robert's School was laid by Bishop Henshaw on March 29, 1930, and the school was blessed and opened on August 24, by the same Bishop in the same year.  Shelagh Street attended the school in the 1950s and she donated the image below from that time.  It was taken during St Robert's School Coronation Pageant in 1953 apparently showing a group of Anglo-Saxon Ladies.

In 1996 OFSTED said this about the school, "... "There are 162 pupils in St. Robert's RC Primary school, 72 boys and 90 girls. The school is situated near a large inner-city estate, an area of considerable social and economic need. The number of pupils entitled to free school meals is very high (about 68%). The character of the area is changing and there are now less Catholic families moving into the estate, which is affecting the school roll. The attainment levels of pupils on entry to the school are below average and there are 51 pupils currently on the school's register of special educational needs, 5 of them on stage 3. The school's mission statement strongly emphasises its aim of basing all action and behaviour on Gospel values. Religious education and worship are an integral part of a curriculum which is designed to be broad, balanced and relevant to the needs of the pupils. The school values the importance of relationships in helping the pupils to fully realise their own abilities and to appreciate those of others."  The images below, shown here with the permission of Graham Todd, show the school in 2000.

St. Robert's School closed for the last time in 2001 and was subsequently demolished as you can see in the images below.
