St. John's Church of England School St John’s is
a voluntary controlled Church of England school
catering for approximately 360 pupils aged from 3 to
11 years. The OFSTED Report from 2013
described it as having a, "... very large
majority of pupils ... from minority ethnic
groups, with about three-quarters having
Pakistani or Bangladeshi heritage. Others come
from a wide range of different groups. About 80%
of pupils speak English as an additional
language, a very high proportion. The
school receives pupil premium funding for almost
40% of its pupils, because they are known to be
eligible for free school meals. This proportion
is above average."
************************ The original school building occupied a site close to St. John's Church. However, it was damaged by a number of fires in 1986 and 1987. The school was rebuilt and re-opened in 1990. Today, it is situated on Clarence Road about a mile south of Manchester city centre in an area of older terraced housing bordered by newer local authority housing, largely for rent. Below:
