The Clarence Inn The
Clarence
Inn was a small, back-street pub on the corner of
Earl Street and Holt Street (later renamed
Holderness Street). It sat across from
Midgeley's butchers shop. The Clarence was
demolished along with Earl Street and Holderness
Street in the redevelopment of the area in the
1970s.
The image below
is shown with the permission of Barbara Webb.
It shows a charabanc sitting outside the Clarence
Inn. Barbara suspects that this was an outing
for railway workers. Her grandfather Alexander
Johnson, a fireman on a steam locomotive, is sitting
beside the driver.
