St.
Agnes
- Church of England The
foundation stone for St. Agnes' Church was laid by
the Bishop of Manchester on the 19th of July,
1884. The completed building was consecrated
in 1885.
It is said that
the church was named by the first rector Rev. Henry
Norburn. He chose the name because the two members of
the clergy who helped in the establishment of the
church, Bishop Fraser and Archdeacon Anson, both had
wives by the name of Agnes.
The building was designed by the architectural practice of J. Medland & Henry Taylor. Pevsner regarded it as, "An amazingly willful design," that incorporated, "... one of Taylor's funny little dormers ---- high on the s side, and there is a quirky little bell-turret." ************************ The images below are shown here with the permission of Les Cotton.
