Overton
House
sits on the corner of Stockport Road and
Kirkmanshulme Lane. Apparently, the first
record of the house is a lease dated 1836 held by
Thomas Knight and Joseph Higginbottom. For
much of its history the house has been home to
doctors. In 1861 Dr. Joseph Gibson Dowse
practiced from the house. At that time it was
called Rose Cottage. It was during Dr. Dowse's
occupancy that the name changed. The map
extract below is dated 1889 and Dr. Dowse was
resident at that time since records say that he sold
it in 1892. I added the colour to emphasise
the site and I added the red arrow to point it out.
Dr. Conway followed Dr. Dowse and after him came Dr.
Storey and Dr. Lurie, who retired in 1964.
The red arrow on the aerial image below shows Overton House in 1953. Today, Overton House
is a Care Home which describes itself as being, "ideally
located for all local amenities and shops and on all
bus routes for easy access to visit your relative."
They add that the services they offer include:
"Long stay care, Short stay care and Respite care."
