Manchester Metropolitan University's New Student Union Building

The architectural practice of Fielden Clegg Bradley Studios say on their website that they were, "... appointed to conduct a number of feasibility studies for the development of Manchester Metropolitan Universities’ Student Union."  One of the options considered was the potential refurbishment of the existing Union building on  Oxford Road.  In the end the decision was to erect a new building on Higher Cambridge Street.

FCB say of the new building that it,  "....includes a main hall, bar, shop, activities and recreation studios, informal and formal meeting spaces as well as office space for student officers and union staff.  The external appearance of the building has been developed to reflect the union's importance as a cultural building. ...

...  Its textural, graphite brick facades contrast with the surrounding red brick architecture, whilst referencing the faience of the Salutation pub and the neighbouring Victorian theatres, dance halls and picture houses.  Internally, a rich interior contrasts with the exterior. A language of exposed structures and services, combined with crafted metal and tile work, lends the building a robust yet decorative aesthetic that is appropriate to its use."
