Rochdale Canal and
Lock Bars
The Rochdale Canal runs 32 miles from Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire to Castleton in Manchester, where it joins the Bridgewater Canal. Over its lengthy the canal has 92 locks and the one shown above, beside Whitworth Street West, is Lock 91. From here the canal passes under Deansgate in a tunnel before reaching The Duke's Lock in Castleton. The converted arches beside the canal
house contain some of the most popular bars in the
city centre including The Baa Bar, The Fat Cat Cafe
Bar, Loaf and Revolution. Bridges cross the canal
allowing access from Whitworth Street West and a
walkway/terrace extends the lenght of the canal
between Deansgate and Lower Moseley Street. |
