Lloyd's
House
Lloyd's
House sits in the northwest corner of Albert Square
where Southmill Street meets Lloyd Street. It
extends along Lloyd Street and Jacksons Row.
It was designed by the architectural practice of
Speakman & Charlesworth in 1867 - 1868 for the
Manchester Shipping Office and Packing Company and
it was the city's first purpose built packing
warehouse.
As you can see in the
image above, the building's name was once emblazoned
above the doorway. In recent times that has been
removed but if you look carefully you can just discern
faint lettering that says, "Shipping Offices and
Packing Company". It shows better in the black
& white image below.
The building
appeared on maps at the end of the 19th
Century. Below is my version of a map from
that period which shows the configuration of the
building and its neighbours.
