King Street 19 King Street is a Grade II Listed
building built circa 1880 with a Twentieth Century shop
front. The listing comments describe the building
as featuring, “... an arcaded range of 4-light
windows on each upper floor: slim cast-iron columns
at 1st floor with arched open-work brackets,
round-headed windows to 2nd floor with set-in
shafts, enriched imposts and linked hood
moulds with large mask keystones (male and female
alternately, all cheerful and stylish); shouldered
windows to 3rd floor; parapet.”
When I took these images in October
of 2014, the building was home to a branch of
Jigsaw. In the 1890s Goodall & Company
occupied 13, 15 and 17 King Street and described
themselves as, "Carpet & Floor Cloth
Warehousemen, Cabinet Makers, Upholsterers &
Decorators." The Goad
map of 1889 seems to suggest that Goodall's actually
occupied numbers 15 to 21.
