Basil Chambers sits
astride the junction of High Street and Nicholas
Croft. The building is named for Basil David who,
between 1963 and 1990, operated various companies from
this bulding. Among them was Holmes Terry &
Co. Each floor of the building had a different
department. The1st Floor was Towels &
Sheeting, 2nd Floor Hosiery & Underwear, 3rd Floor
Shoes & Outerwear, 4th Floor Clothing, 5th Floor
Canteen & 6th Floor Building/General Repairs etc,
and the basement was the packing area.
Today the building is
home to a number of companies trading in diverse
areas.
As you can see below, the rear of the building is fully glazed. The map below shows
that in 1886 the building was home to a bank, a
machinery show room and a boot factory.
