21 Newton
Street
21 Newton Street is a warehouse
designed by the architectural practice of Clegg
and Knowles.
It is part of a block defined by Dale Street, Newton Street, Cavell Street and Little Lever Street. The warehouse is a 5-storey building with retail outlets at street level and offices above. Further along Dale Street is a three-storey block of former dwellings now used as office space (see below). The building on the corner, painted white with black trim, was once the Haunch of Venison Public House Below is a sketch map of the building in 1888. Note that in those days Cavell Street was Nightingale Street, a change of famous nurses. As you can see, it featured two public houses (the Haunch of Venison at number 24 Dale Street), a restaurant and a number of street level shops. The aerial image below shows the building in 1946. I have shaded it in pink. Close Window |
