Maybrook House

Maybrook House occupies the corner of Blackfriars Street and Deansgate.  This mixed-use seven-storey reinforced concrete building was built in 1973.  It comprises retail units at street level with a restaurant and offices above.  Among the occupants of the office space is the IBM Manchester Lab.

Prior to the erection of Maybrook House the block was occupied by a number of buildings that dated back to at least 1844 when the map below was drawn.

By 1886 there had been some changes as you can see from this detailed plan extracted from a map of that date.

The Slaters Directory of Manchester and Salford for 1911 lists the occupants of the buildings.

DEANSGATE

BLACKFRIARS STREET

If you click on the link below you can see a 1921 image of the corner from the Manchester Central Library Digital Collection (as long as it is online at the time).

These buildings were still in place in 1953 when the RAF aerial photograph below was taken.  The red arrow points out the corner and the shaded area highlights the block occupied today by Maybrook House.

At some point after 1953 the various street level retail outlets were swept away to make room for a large Burton's store.  The link below shows it in 1973, clearly just prior to demolition.  You will note that apart from the K Shoe Shop everything is boarded up.
