The Green
Quarter Located just north of
the city centre across Cheetham Hill Road from Victoria
Station and the MEN Arena is the Green Quarter. It
has been described as "a self-contained urban oasis,
combining 10 cutting-edge apartment blocks, business
accommodation, hotel, leisure and retail facilities set
against the precious commodity of lush landscaped open
green space."
In 2004 Crosby Homes unveiled plans for the biggest housing development ever undertaken in Manchester. The proposal called for the construction of almost 1,500 high quality one and two bedroomed apartments, supported by a huge commercial development and a 10-storey hotel. More than half of the area will be public open space featuring lawns, tree-lined walkways, water features and landscaping. Andrew Brady, Crosby
Homes’ Regional Chairman, said: “This is the largest and
most exciting project Crosby Homes have ever undertaken,
and represents a momentous landmark in the regeneration
of Manchester. Over the next five years we will be
creating an entirely new prospect from a once-derelict
wasteland and, in so doing, opening up a wealth of
opportunities for people to live in what will become one
of the most thriving and enviable residential areas of
the city."
The development of the Green Quarter has gone through a number of phases. Below are photographs taken in May of 2008 showing the latest construction phase on a piece of land with the River Irk and the railway on one side and Cheetham Hill Road on the other. The images below were taken in November of 2009 At the point at which
Cheetham Hill Road turns left to pass the MEN Arena the
complex includes two buildings. They are the black
glass Park Inn and oval shaped Peninsula office tower.
