UMIST Main Building -
The Sackville Street Building
UMIST stands for The University of
Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. It was a
university based in the centre of the city of Manchester
in England specialising in technical and scientific
subjects. In 2004 UMIST merged with the Victoria
University of Manchester to form the University of
Manchester. Prior to the merger the "Main Building"
of UMIST was the one shown below at the end of Sackville
Street on Whitworth Street. After the merger it was
renamed the "Sackville Street Building" This is in fact two buildings.
The first was the Manchester Municipal Technical School
(seen below) constructed between 1895 and 1902. The
architects were Bradshaw Gass & Hope. Clare
Hartwell, the author of the Pevsner Architectural Guide
to Manchester, describes it as follows: "A splendid
expression of municipal pride and confidence. It is a
grand composition in the Loire style, looking larger
than its 5 storeys.... Brick with red sandstone,
lavishly decorated with tawny-red terracotta panels with
Renaissance motifs by Burmantofts. The prominent dome on
the Whitworth Street side houses an observatory, the
gift of Frances Godlee." It is now a Grade II listed
building.
Below is the original main
entrance on Sackville Street. The original building was
extended along Whitworth Street, towards London Road,
between 1927 and 1957 by the architects Bradshaw Gass
& Hope. |
