University
of Manchester - Jackson Street Mill
The mill on Jackson
street was incorporated into the former UMIST campus
and in the 1960s H. S. Fairhurst and Sons converted
and extended it to provide facilities for Chemical,
Civil and Mechanical Engineering, as well as the
Chemistry Department. It is now part of the
University of Manchester's Northern Campus and they
list among its present uses: Biomolecular Sciences,
Chemical Engineering and Analytical Sciences,
Occupational Health, Corrosion and Protection, and the
Materials Performance Centre
The "Mill" has an elegant entrance at its eastern end. ****** The mage below shows the mill in 1953. Below is an image of
the Jackson Street Mill taken in the 1960s. The
area of demolition in the foreground was site
preparation for the Mancunian Way. (The images
was taken by Pauline Leech and generously donated by
Chetham's Library, where Pauline worked for many
years.)
