The Precinct Centre - Oxford Road and Booth Street West

For more than 4 decades the University of Manchester's Precinct Centre has occupied a site on the corner of Booth Street West and Oxford Road.  It was built between 1970 and 1972 to a design by the architectural practice of Wilson & Womersley, who were responsible for the Hulme Crescents and the Arndale Centre.

It was located at the Oxford Road end of the Manchester Business School West and was linked to The Business School East by way of a bridge across Oxford Road.

The University of Manchester's Guide to buildings listed a large number of occupants of this building complex:
  • Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Relations Resource Centre
  • CRIC (ESRC Centre for Research and Innovation and Competition)
  • Devonshire House
  • Harold Hankins Building
  • Humanities Faculty Office
  • Legal Advice Centre
  • Manchester Centre for Healthcare Management
  • Manchester Institute of Innovation Research
  • Manchester Student Homes
  • Precinct Shopping Centre
  • PREST

In 2016 the Precinct Centre and the bridge across Oxford Road became part of a major redevelopment project.  The bridge was demolished and the Precinct Centre was stripped back and became Phase Two of the redevelopment of the Business School complex.

The School's website explains that, "... The phase two plans focus on the redevelopment of the existing precinct centre to create a 40,500 sq ft retail and leisure offer, specifically designed to host a mix of high quality brands and amenities.  The plans reconfigure the existing precinct centre to create up to 14 units with double-height glazed frontages onto Oxford Road.  The variety of units will create a mixed offer of retail, food and leisure for students, staff and visitors to the University and Business School."
