Dukes
92 - Dukes Grill and Albert's Shed
Dukes 92, Dukes
Grill and Albert's Shed occupy a cluster of
buildings beside Lock 92 on the Rochdale
Canal. The lock is known as the Duke's Lock
since it is the all important lock which lowers the
Rochdale Canal into the Duke of Bridgewater's Canal
in the Castlefield Basin.
Dukes 92 occupies an
old stable block related to the adjacent Merchant's
Warehouse. Since its opening in 1991, Dukes
has expanded three times. Today it comprises
two bars, three private events spaces, a grill
restaurant, a canalside terrace and a balcony that
overlooks the canal basin.
The conversion of
the old stables into Dukes was led by Jim
Ramsbottom. Jim's uncle Albert owned a shed on
the site in which his uncle kept his tools and
materials. Apparently Albert was convinced to
move out of the shed so it could be transformed into
a new restaurant on the condition that it was named
after him, hence the Albert's Shed Restaurant.
The collection of
old buildings that were transformed into the bar and
restaurant can be seen in the aerial photograph
below, dated 1953.
