The Air & Space Museum
At one time there were two market buildings on Liverpool
Road called Upper and Lower Campsfield Markets and in
between was St. Matthew's Church built by Sir Charles
Barry, the architect responsible for the Art Gallery and
Athenaeum Club in Manchester and the Palace of
Westminster in London. St. Matthew's was demolished in
1951 but the two market buildings remain. Lower
Campsfield Market (see below) was built in 1876 by
Mangnall and Littlewood. In 1900 it became the City
Exhibition Hall. During WWII it was used to build barage balloons. In May 1983 it became part of the Museum of Science and Industry as the Air and Space Hall. |
