The Gaythorne Tunnel

This plaque is located on Century Street which runs beneath the railway viaduct  that carries the Metro Link over Deansgate.  As it says it commemorates the  reconstruction of the Gaythorn Tunnel in 1902.  The tunnel carries the Rochdale Canal under Deansgate and into the Castlefield Basin where it joins the Bridgewater Canal.

There is something ironic and perhaps reflective of the year 2008 that it is flanked by grafiti and an empty beer bottle lies underneath it.

The entrance to the tunnel can be seen beyond the lock gates.
